The Halo Code | An end to hair discrimination
Posted on November 2021
We are excited to announce that we are one of the first companies within the Recruitment sector to adopt The Halo Code – the UK's first Black hair code.
The Halo Code defends the freedom and security to wear all afro-hairstyles without restriction or judgment and our adoption of this initiative protects our employees right to embrace and celebrate this important part of their identity.
We hope initiatives such as the Halo Code will move us one step closer to a world free from discrimination and we encourage all companies to sign up to the Halo Code.
The Code
We champion the right of employees to embrace all Afro-hairstyles. We acknowledge that Afro-textured hair is an important part of our black and mixed-race employees’ racial, ethnic, cultural and religious identities, and requires specific styling for hair health and maintenance.
We celebrate Afro-textured hair worn in all styles including, but not limited to, afros, locs, twists, braids, cornrows, fades, hair straightened through the application of heat or chemicals, weaves, wigs, headscarves, and wraps.
At Venn Group, we recognise and celebrate our colleagues’ identities. We are a community built on an ethos of equality and respect where hair texture and style have no bearing on an employee's ability to succeed.
Our employee tell us why Halo is important
“I’m extremely excited Venn Group will be adopting the Halo Code. In previous organisations I was told and made to feel like my natural hair was unprofessional which I’ve carried with me for a long time. It’s only recently that I’ve felt comfortable letting my hair down (literally) and embracing my natural hair. My colleagues have been great in encouraging me to wear my hair naturally so it is great we are publicly acknowledging and encouraging all black and mixed-race people to do the same!"
Ashley Dean, Executive Consultant.
"Adopting the HALO code, is not something a lot of companies would be bold enough to do and so it says a lot about Venn Group that they’re willing to be a trendsetter! I definitely think it’s an important movement to be a part."
Louise Francis, Resourcer
“My Afro hair gives me great pride and freedom, being able to represent my true self."
Rod Byatt - Senior Credit Controller
"I love my natural hair because it’s a gift that only us black women have!"
Jasmine Alexander - Associate Consultant
"If Venn Group can accept my kinks and twist and my different styled wigs, so can you!"
Crystal Bright - Associate Consultant
"I'm proud to be a part of a company that actively takes measures to eradicate discrimination. Long may it continue! I hope the black and mixed women, in particular, can continue to thrive without the daily worry about their hair."
Ken Kittoe - Diversity, Inclusion & Engagement Associate
My hair = versatility at it's best!"
Kadija Kamara - Business Services Administrator
We continue to strive to create a inclusive workplace, whereby each of our employees feel they can bring their true self to work.
